View Galleries >An entrepreneur and self-made businessman, Cal Nichols founded Gasland Oil Ltd. in 1985, a chain of retail and fuel outlets in Alberta. Gasland Oil Ltd. quickly grew to over 50 branded independent petroleum outlets in Western Canada. In 1996, Cal sold all of Gasland's petroleum marketing business, retaining Gasland Properties Ltd.
Gasland Properties is now principally a commercial property management and development company with properties throughout Alberta. Our focus has always been on putting out quality product like the luxury community of Paradise Estates.
Paradise Estates was born from being in the right place with the right property. Cal knew that he wanted to build something truly special to match the beautiful Kelowna location. He envisioned a community that took advantage of the amazing views, the warm Okanagan weather, and the access to world-class wineries.
The scale of the project is huge and Cal’s experience in quality property management is shining through in every decision. You can follow along with the construction progress here.
Besides being a savvy businessman, Cal is best known locally for his prominent role in saving the Edmonton Oilers National Hockey League franchise from leaving Edmonton.
When the Oilers franchise was put up for sale in 1997, Nichols spearheaded the bid from the Edmonton Investors Group by raising the $110 million required to purchase the Team. Established in 1997, The Edmonton Investor's Group was the limited partnership that owned the Edmonton Oilers National Hockey League Franchise. This spearheaded the creation of the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, which funds education programs, medical research projects and a wide variety of other community enhancement initiatives. EIG initially consisted of 38 investors when the purchase of the Oilers was completed on May 5, 1998. Prior to the sale of the Oilers to Daryl Katz in June 2008, EIG (with more than 30 individual shareholders) was the largest ownership group in the NHL. For ten years, founder Cal Nichols served as its Governor and Chairman.
